Amazing customer service and attention to detail! I was assisted in every step of the way to get my new little Yorkie Cooper to me safe and sound. I came across their website after almost being scammed by a fraudulent company and I was so relieved to have found them. I highly recommend that you get your next puppy from them you won’t regret it! I will definitely use them again in the future.

If you are wondering if this is the best service let me assure you it is. Everything about this experience has exceeded my expectations. As a former veterinary technician wildlife rehabber and zookeeper I know great animal and pet people when I meet them. Mawoo is bringing lives together in all the right ways. I’m telling everyone about this and of course seeing is believing. Our new bundle of joy arrived just as described but beyond our wildest dreams we are totally in love and now on day five after delivery. The customer vip treatment was an unexpected bonus and the breeder was so nice and caring.

What Is the History of the Labrador Retriever?

Green plus icon

The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland and Labrador, a then-British province that is today part of Canada. This breed descended from a now-extinct dog breed called St. John’s Water Dog. These dogs were highly skilled divers that supported fishermen with retrieving fish that had fallen off their lines. The breed was imported to England in the 19th century, where it was developed by royalty (the family of Earl of Malmesbury) into the Labrador Retriever dog.

Labradors became recognized by the Kennel Club of the UK in 1903 and by the American Kennel Club in 1917. Given their intelligence and high energy levels, these dogs have become popular working dogs and hunting dogs. Their friendly dispositions have also made them one of the most popular family companions worldwide.

Are Labs Good Family Pets?

Green plus icon

Labrador Retrievers are fantastic family pets. In fact, they have been the most popular dog breed in the United States for over 30 years! This breed is friendly and outgoing and enjoys spending time with people. Labs also make good companions for families with toddlers or small children. They are high-energy dogs and so benefit from living in larger homes with outdoor spaces or being taken out for exercise frequently if living in a smaller space. Labs are highly intelligent and trainable, which is why they are often used as therapy dogs, service dogs, and for search and rescue missions. Adding a Lab to your family is like adding a smart, loyal, and caring family companion.

What Health Problems Can Labrador Retrievers Have?

Green plus icon

Labrador Retrievers are prone to specific health and genetic issues. Some of the most common health problems in Labradors include:

  1. Hip and elbow dysplasia: This is a condition that results from the hip or elbow joints not developing properly, leading to cartilage damage and pain.
  2. Eye problems: Labradors can suffer from a variety of common eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal dysplasia.
  3. Heart disease: Common cardiovascular conditions in Labs include dilated cardiomyopathy and subvalvular aortic stenosis.
  4. Skin allergies: Labs can develop allergies to pollen, mold, and dust mites; allergies can result in redness or itchiness of the skin.
  5. Obesity: Labradors are at high risk of weight gain; high weight can cause joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes.

Given these risk factors, it is important to have your Labrador Retriever regularly checked by a veterinarian. Early diagnosis and preventative measures can help your Lab live a healthy, happy life.

What Are the Types of Labrador Retrievers?

Green plus icon

There are three recognized types of Labrador Retriever: 1. The American Labrador Retriever 2. The English Labrador Retriever, and 3. The Canadian Labrador Retriever. All three are types of Labs share many similarities, but there are some differences in size, form, and personality across them:

  1. The American Labrador Retriever is the largest, typically weighing 55 to 80 lb. Their build is muscular and stocky, and they have thick, water-resistant coats. American Labs are known for their outgoing, energetic personalities and their love of play.
  2. The English Labrador Retriever is slightly smaller than the American Lab, weighing 45 to 75 lb. They have more athletic builds and shorter coats. English Labs are known for their gentle dispositions
  3. The Canadian Labrador Retriever is the smallest of the three types, weighing 40 to 65 lb. They have lean builds and short coats. Canadian Labs are known for their love of the outdoors.

All three types of Labs can come in yellow, chocolate, or black colors.

Where Can I Adopt a Labrador Retriever?

Green plus icon

Labs are a popular breed and can be commonly found at shelters and rescues. Your best bet for finding a Lab to adopt is by searching your local adoption agencies. If these organizations do not have Labrador Retrievers available, you can then extend your search to regional or national organizations. Examples of reputable organizations are: Lab Rescue LRCP and American Lab Rescue. You can also look at state-specific agencies such as the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida and Lab Rescue Inc. Oklahoma. If you find a more local organization, do additional research to understand their philosophy and practices, including any vet care or behavioral training they provide their Labs while under their care.

How Do I Find a Reputable Labrador Retriever Breeder?

Green plus icon

Given the popularity of this breed, it is important to be vigilant to avoid purchasing from puppy mills or backyard breeders. We recommend taking the following steps to find a reputable Lab breeder:

  1. Ask your network: start by asking family, friends, and veterinarians if they know any reputable Labrador Retriever breeders.
  2. Search online: Look for reputable websites that vet breeders to ensure health and safety standards. Examples include breed registries and vetting websites such as Mawoo Pets.
  3. Speak with the breeder: Once you have found a potential breeder match, speak with them to understand their breeding practices, licenses and registrations, and health measures (including vet clearances and genetic tests).
  4. Visit the home or facility: If possible, arrange to see the breeding space firsthand. While there, pay attention to the cleanliness of the space and the health of the breeding parents, including their temperament.

If the breeder does not seem like the right match, don’t be afraid to walk away. Finding the right puppy from a reputable breeder can be a time-consuming process, and it’s worth your time to be diligent. At Mawoo Pets, we have vetted over 1,000 breeders to select responsible ones with excellent health, safety, and socialization standards. Our team is here to help you find the right Labrador puppy and breeder, and to arrange for the travel of your puppy home.
